What makes us unique?
About Us
At Affinity Speech Pathology families experience a unique and high quality service. We don’t just ‘do therapy’ – we do so much more. Our therapists provide family centred care. This means that we:
- Listen
- Set goals with the family
- Educate and empower the family on how to help their child
- Work collaboratively with the whole team – family, educators, other therapists
- Problem solve with families
- Individualise therapy sessions for each child because each child has a unique set of strengths.
- Helping individuals to improve their speech, language, literacy and communication skills;
- Empowering families by equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to help their child;
- Helping children to see that they CAN do it;
- Working with people in the child’s community to create a supportive communication environment;
- Making therapy fun and meaningful.
We are dedicated to ongoing learning and professional development, to make sure that we are up to date with the latest evidenced based ways of helping your child.
Some of the training we have completed includes –
- Hanen It Takes Two To Talk – to help late talkers;
- DIR Floortime – to help families whose children have developmental differences;
- Lidcombe and RESTART DCM – to help children who stutter;
- Sounds-Write and Read;
- PROMPT, DTTC, Nuffield Dyspraxia Program and REST therapies – to help children with speech sound difficulties;
- PODD – to help children use alternative ways of communicating;
- LAMP – to help children use voice output devices to communicate;
- Trauma and Attachment – to better understand the link between trauma, brain development and communication difficulties.
- Gestalt Language Processing – to help children to learn language.
Our team
Our team consists of highly skilled, professional and friendly speech pathologists. We are specialists in paediatric therapy. Each team member brings their own unique way of engaging children and helping them to learn, grow and connect with others.
Affinity Speech Pathology is a workplace that fosters skill development, positive team culture and fun. When staff are happy, this flows on to our families, who receive high quality services in a positive and engaging team. Owner and senior clinician, Nyssa, is passionate about mentoring and supporting other speech pathologists. She believes in working with staff strengths and interests and creating a team that supports and encourages one another.
Hi, I'm Nyssa.
Owner / Senior Speech Pathologist / Ideas Woman
Nyssa is the heart and soul behind Affinity Speech Pathology. She has almost 20 years experience in paediatric speech pathology, working across private practice, health, education, and disability. Nyssa has worked with children with speech sound disorders, language disorders, literacy difficulties, Autism, ADHD, global delays, stuttering, challenging behaviours, trauma backgrounds, and much more.
Nyssa has special interest in the following areas:
- Preschool and school aged stuttering – Nyssa is one of the few speech pathologists in Australia who have training in both Lidcombe and RESTART DCM – both evidenced based approaches for the treatment of stuttering.
- Speech sound disorders – including Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Nyssa utilises her training in evidenced based therapies to help children improve their speech skills.
- Language difficulties across age groups – Nyssa works with the child’s strengths and interests to build their language skills. Sometimes this involves role playing with Marvel Characters, going on a bear hunt, or learning to play handball!
Nyssa created Affinity Speech Pathology out of seeing a need for families to be supported and empowered during their journey with their child. Nyssa believes in therapy that is
- Strengths based (what is working well that we can do more of?),
- Individualised (what will work for THIS child and family?), and
- Fun! (because when it’s fun, children are engaged!)
When Nyssa isn’t working you’ll find her enjoying her busy, noisy slightly chaotic life with her husband, three young children and dog Barney.
