Late Talkers and other Early Language Difficulties

What you need to know

It is typical for children to say their first word by 12 months of age and be combining two word phrases by two years of age. By the time a child reaches three years of age, we expect they will have around 1000 words in their vocabulary.  Some ‘late talkers’ (children who are later to achieve their milestones) do naturally catch up.  But many don’t.  These are the kids that need help with their language skills.

How we can help?

A speech pathologist is the best person to assess your child’s language skills to help work out if your child needs therapy.  Speech pathologists can help your child develop their language skills and support you to know how to help your child.  At Affinity Speech Pathology, we are trained in Hanen Takes Two to Talk®, which specifically targets late talkers. We are also skilled in identifying if your child might need to see other professionals such as a paediatrician, occupational therapist or Ear Nose and Throat specialist and help you navigate this process.
