Speech Sound Disorders
What you need to know
This includes phonological and articulation delays / disorders as well as childhood apraxia of speech (CAS).
All children go through a period of saying sounds incorrectly as they are learning to speak. Some children, however, have errors that they don’t grow out of. Other children have unusual sound errors. A small percentage of children have underlying motor speech issues. Difficulties in speech sounds can result in your child not being able to communicate clearly with others. This can impact their confidence, social emotional development and can sometimes result in behaviour difficulties. Research also shows that if speech sound errors are still persistent when the child reaches 5 ½ years of age, it can lead to problems with literacy and achieving at school.
